Visiting Artist Report

The 2013 Bay Area Glass Institute’s Visiting Artist series has been an exciting one.

The series started off with in June with glass artist and manager of the glass studio at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Glass Pavilion, Jeff Mack. Under Jeff’s thoughtful instruction the students, in the Finding Form-Preparing Pattern workshop, created intricate vessels. Jeff’s Sunday’s hot shop demonstration was well attended and he created a fun green dinosaur and a beautiful blue patterned bowl.

Renowned flameworker, Robert Mickelsen joined BAGI in August. The students in the Lifeforms workshop created sculptures based on nature. The flameworking studio was adorned with whimsical glass trees and bugs along with hands and even a giraffe. Robert and Demetra Theofanous collaborated side by side during the public demonstration. Robert created a life-sized hand and Demetra formed a glass leaf that came to rest on one of the fingers.

The third and final artist in the series will be glass diva, Laura Donefer, coming November 8th through the 10th. Laura will be teaching Dancing with the Diva; a workshop in off the wall non-traditional techniques. She will be the lead gaffer for BAGI’s Ignite Your Nights, the second Saturday demonstration series, and Laura will wrap up her visit on Sunday with an artist lecture complete with power point presentation.
