Matt Szösz Reception Review

On Sunday, January 10th, GLANC members attended a private reception and lecture by C. Matthew Szösz, which was hosted by Bullseye Resource Center in Emeryville.

Matthew Szösz explaining his work to GLANC members

Matthew is an artist that came to glass in a unique manner and with a unique set of skills. His original  training was in design and furniture making. It wasn't until graduate school that he approached glass as an art material. He constantly experiments with glass and videos these experiments in order to learn from his mistakes. In the process he has come up with new and original categories of work: Inflatables, Expandables, Trail Mobiles, Lace, and Glass Ropes to name just a few.

It was clear to those of us in attendance, that we were seeing work that was new, creative, experimental, original and at the very edge of what was possible to do in glass.

We were also introduced to Bullseye Resource Center Bay Area’s first Artist in Residence, Anna Mlasowsky, also a cutting-edge artist who happens to be Matt’s wife. GLANC intends to return to Bullseye this spring to see her work as it progresses.
